Wright City defense struggles in losses to O'Fallon Christian

The Wright City offense couldn’t help its defense in the Wildcats’ 6-2 loss to O’Fallon Christian Saturday at CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

After being fooled by Wright City starting pitcher Donovan Mozee for five innings, the O’Fallon Christian hitters found a weakness in the Wildcat defense.

“They probably realized we weren’t as mobile as we should have been,” Wright City Head Coach Shannon Wells said.

The Eagles dropped down four consecutive bunts and scored four runs on three Wright City errors during the inning.

“We just couldn’t handle bunt situations,” Wells said. “We just threw the ball away all afternoon. It’s a mental thing that you can only talk about so many times.”

The Wildcats had an early scoring opportunity, getting two runners on in the first inning.

Justin Bote grounded into a double-play, however, to end the first scoring threat of the afternoon.

Kyle Tuepker drove in Tyler Brittain in the third inning to tie the game at 1, but O’Fallon Christian answered with four runs in the sixth.

Mozee drove in a run in the top of the sixth, but the rally was halted a batter later.

“We left a lot of guys on base,” Wells said. “I shouldn’t say we should have beaten them because they’re a good team. But we should have played better.”

Tuepker and Troy Muse each went 2-for-4 in the first game.

Brittain, Mozee and Clayton Sharp collected one hit a piece.

On the mound, Mozee lasted 5 1/3 innings, striking out 10 and giving up four unearned runs on three hits.

Brittain relieved Mozee and gave up two unearned runs.

The Wildcats committed six errors in the loss, which allowed O’Fallon Christian to score six runs on three hits and drop Wright City to 6-3 on the year.

“Donovan was really shutting them down,” Wells said. “So they did what they probably should have done and went to small ball.”

In the second game of the doubleheader, O’Fallon Christian scored six runs on four hits as the Wildcats committed three more errors.

Michael Holmes started for Wright City and pitched 5 1/3 innings, walked six, struck out two and gave up three earned-runs.
