Wright City High School will celebrate its commencement ceremony Friday night with 95 seniors expected to receive their diplomas.Graduation is set for a 7:30 p.m. start on the football field, weather permitting.Principal Shawn Brown is hopeful forecasted rain will shift out of the picture and plans to make a decision by noon Friday as to whether the ceremony will be moved inside the gymnasium. In that event, the start time will remain the same with doors opening at 6 p.m. No tickets are necessary, but supporters are encouraged to arrive early, as seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.Brown said the Class of 2017 has a lot of enthusiasm and many reasons to celebrate.“The word that comes to mind with this group is pride,” said Brown. “They have taken great pride in being Wright City Wildcats, and it kind of exudes from them.”This group of seniors has also been an integral part of helping the school earn a bronze rating from the U.S. News and World Report in each of the past three years.“They talk about how much they love their teachers and enjoy being at school,” said Brown. “They’ve been successful academically, as well.”Many of those seniors were presented with scholarships during an awards night on Monday. Approximately $176,000 in scholarship money was distributed to students heading toward careers in nursing, music or the military, among others.
