If one thing can be said about the Wright City boys track team headed into the coming season, it’s that each member will be prepared.
While the Wildcats have just 12 letterwinners back this year, the members of this team will be ready to go, senior Dayton Humphreys said.
Humphreys, who will run the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays, said that if he can build on his efforts each day, achieving his goal of making it to the Class 3 state meet should be an attainable goal.
“I just want to PR every time and I just want to get faster,” Humphreys said. “My goal is to go up to state and win a medal and take the school record. Kden and I have kept things consistent. We go outside and just run sprints together. We want to make each other better. Even when we’re lifting, we work to make ourselves and each other better.”
Senior Terrence Love (400-meters, 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays) said that physical fitness will be important for Wildcats athletes, as will mental preparedness.
“We’re going to have to be conditioned and we’re going to have to push,” Love said. “That’s what we’re going to have to do to be better than we were last year and that’s what we want to be.”
At its best as a team last season, Wright City’s boys turned in five fifth-place finishes at the district level, Coach Fred Ross said.
Ross said that, for this season, his goals are relatively simple.
“We just want to get better every day,” Ross said. “Track is one of those sports where you get a time, distance or height to start with and you try to improve on that every day. Our team philosophy is that we want to try and set a PR at every meet. We just want to go out and be better each day.”
Ross added that, while there is a good senior core, some youth will be expected to step up and fill important roles.
“I’ve got some underclassmen coming in who will fill things out,” Ross said. “Quincy will be a good leader. He’s returning as a thrower from last year. Quinn Schnarre is out here and I know he’s a good leader for football, so I expect some good leadership from him. Terrence Love and Kaden Cross are (two) of our better runners.”
Wright City will begin its season on March 23 at the Van-Far meet.
