Wright City boys face Winfield in first round of Clopton Tournament

Posted

With a 4-4 record at the semester break, the Wright City boys basketball team was given the No. 5 seed in the Clopton Tournament next week.

The Wildcats will square off with No. 4 Winfield (5-7) Tuesday at 7 p.m.

“They are a strong offensive team,” Wright City Head Coach David Evans said. “They don’t run anything special, they just finish.”

The Warriors and Wildcats have played a pair of common opponents so far this season.

Winfield beat Elsberry Nov. 11 (72-70) and the Blue Knights Nov. 30 (48-42).

Wright City lost to Elsberry Dec. 15 (74-55) and the Blue Knights three days later (87-86).

“We have to do two things to be successful against Winfield,” Evans said. “We have to play tight, disciplined defense and we have to stay out of foul trouble. Lately we have gotten some very lazy defensive tendencies which have resulted in a lot of fouls.”

Evans said his team’s main goal for the tournament is to be competitive.

The winner of Monday’s game will face No. 1 Monroe City or the Warrenton J.V. team, which landed the No. 8 seed, Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The championship will be played Saturday at 7 p.m., and the consolation championship is set for Saturday at 4 p.m.
