Wright City Boys Excited About Potential

Coach Kenneth Brown is excited about the depth and experience on this year’s Wright City basketball team. The Wildcats boast six seniors who hope to improve on their win total from a year ago.“It’s one of the deeper teams I’ve had where I can consistently put four or five and rotate in and out,” said Brown. “It’s going to be a lot about matchups this year depending on who we’re playing.”Brown says Wright City will try to exploit opponent’s weaknesses. This season the Wildcats return senior Cody Klemp at the point guard position after he averaged a team-high 8.2 points.“We’re looking at Cody to lead the way as far as assists, and he’s a pretty good playmaker himself,” said Brown. He is also expecting significant output from junior Ty Davis, who netted 6.2 points per contest last season and opened this season with an 18-point showing.“He may be our leading scorer and should be able to create a lot for us on offense,” said Brown.Bret Noble is also expected to play a starting guard role and will present a three-point shooting threat.“Noble will provide a spark for us from outside,” said Brown. “He’s got a really good outside shot.”He says the Wildcats will run a variation of the flex offense, looking to get everyone involved.“I’m trying to extend the tempo,” said Brown. “We had a lot of fast break points last season and we want to increase that.”He says his posts this year are athletic enough to engage in a fast-paced game, with Christian Thompson and Justin Wade starting underneath the basket.“Christian can run the floor well, and he’s so big that he can muscle his way around,” said Brown. “Justin is really good defensively. He shuts the middle down when he gets going.”Brown is also confident in players off the bench, including Devin Telkamp, who is a solid shooter.Alvin Chenoweth also provides a threat for the Wildcats.“He has gotten a lot better, and defensively I can also put him on one of their best offensive guys, and he’ll lock him down,” said Brown.Adam North will provide size off the bench at 6-foot-3, while the Wildcats also hope to get senior Jensen Elrod back for the second semester.Brown says the team’s primary goal is to improve upon its season from last year.“We’re looking to do better than we have in the past, but I want to make sure we’re focusing on one game at a time,” said Brown. “Consistency is the biggest concern for our team.”The Wildcats will open the Eastern Missouri Conference schedule against Montgomery County.“Our strength has to be our depth and we’ll need to rely on that,” said Brown. “Rebounding will also be a big key for us.”WRIGHT CITY BASKETBALLDerrick Forsythe Photo.
