Wright City bond issue fails by narrow margin

Posted

Wright City voters narrowly rejected a $1.5 million bond issue that would have financed the purchase of property for a new city hall and more park space.

A total of 158 voters, or 59.62 percent of the ballots cast in Tuesday's special election, supported the ballot measure. However, a two-thirds majority from voters was needed to pass the bond issue.

The measure was opposed by 106 voters, according to unofficial results. The voter turnout was 13.28 percent.

As part of the proposed plan, the city had signed a contract contingent on voter approval to purchase the former St. Charles Assembly of God Church property at 636 Westwoods Road, just east of the Lions Club, for $322,000. The city would have renovated the former church facility into a new city hall.

Elsewhere on the 4 1/2-acre property, there was enough room to construct two ballfields and a playground.

City officials also planned to renovate the existing city hall facility to provide more room for the police department.
