Wright City board approves buying tract

The Wright City Board of Aldermen unanimously approved buying land and a building for a new city hall site. The board approved an ordinance to allocate $320,000 from a recently approved bond issue to purchase the former Assembly of God Church, located at 636 Westwoods Road, which will be renovated for a new Wright City city hall. The renovation and expansion is expected to be completed sometime in 2017.With voters approving the $1.5 million bond issue in April, the city approving the site in May and now approving the purchase of the location, as well as 4.5 acres of land surrounding the building, progress toward the city hall relocation seems to be moving at a rapid pace.Next, the board will select a firm to design the building and surrounding property and Board President Dan Rowden said the recent rapid pace likely will not continue.“This is not a quick process,” Rowden said. “One of the architectural firms put out a proposed time line just to get it out to bid that would take us into January. I don’t want the citizens to think we are not working hard on this. We are and we will continue to do so. Realize these types of projects, especially when you have multiple buildings and grounds that all have to be engineered. It takes time to design that.”Revenue from the bond issue will be used not only for a new city hall. The project also calls for renovating the current city hall for the police station and includes adding parking spaces and possibly using the lower level for a food pantry and storm shelter.Due to the church building’s location between Wright City West Elementary and Wright City High School, city officials have also discussed using the remaining land surrounding the property for construction of two ballfields and a playground, which could create an athletic complex with the WCHS football and baseball field overlooking the recently purchased property.Wright City
