Coming off a season-opening loss to St. Charles West on Friday, the Wright City girls’ soccer team faced a quick turnaround in getting back into action on Monday.
It proved well worth it, as the Wildcats went on the road and blanked Hazelwood East 8-0.
Scoring for Wright City (1-1) were senior Sandy Lopez-Luna and freshman Haley Elsenrath with two goals apiece, while senior Norma Diego, freshman Caitlin Williams, junior Ada Ferrell, and sophomore Makenzie Holloway each added a single goal.
Assists were tallied by Williams, senior Kaitlyn Mikus, and Elsenrath, with two apiece, while Ferrell also added one.
Junior Marli Burkhardt earned the shutout win in goal.
Wright City next returns to the pitch at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Veritas Christian.
WRIGHT CITY TRACK OPENS AT VAN-FAR – Both the girls and boys teams showed well at the Van-Far open meet on Monday.
The Wildcat girls finished second among seven teams with 123 points, while the boys earned fourth with 98 points, as Louisiana won both the boys' and girls' titles.
For the girls, junior Anna Klekamp (14.22 seconds) was second in the 100-meter race, while freshman Victoria Riggs placed third in both the 400 (1:11.73) and 800 (2:52.22), and won the 1,600-meter race (6:04.53). Freshman Makiya Harris won the 100-meter hurdles (18.43).
The 4x100 (55.90 seconds) and 4x200 (2:01.33) relay teams both took second. Harris, senior Jolee Lockhart, Klekamp and sophomore Rebekah Riggs ran in both races.
In the shot put, sophomore Joshlyn Hawn (8.27 meters) and senior Sadie Sehnert (8.21) took third and fourth, respectively. Hawn was second in the discus (26.66m) while Sehnert (29.0) finished third in the javelin.
Senior Gretchen Stockmann was second in the high jump (1.17) and fourth in the triple jump (8.60). Lockhart finished third (4.17) in the long jump while sophomore Alliana Schone finished fourth (4.07).
On the boys’ side, senior Kaden Cross won the races in the 100 (11.42 seconds) and 200 (24.38) meters. He outdueled sophomore teammate Hayden Berg (24.53) in the 200.
In the 400 meters, junior Andrew Staats (57.48) and sophomore Joshua Harris (57.92) finished third and fourth, respectively.
In the 1,600, sophomore James Guinn (5:31.90) took third while he was fourth in the 3,200 (12:33.86).
The 4x100 and 4x200 team of Berg, Humphreys, Cross, and Aidan Benefiel took first (46.32 seconds) and second (1:38.47), respectively, while the 4x400 relay team of Staats, Harris, Benefiel and Ethan Weber placed third (4:01.70).
Junior Kayden Speiser (5.5 m) finished second in the long jump.
