With his team outmatched physically, Coach Matt Brooks wasn’t expecting to hand Brentwood its first loss of the season. But he would have liked to have seen Wright City compete on a closer scale with its Week Nine opponent. The Wildcats lost 56-0 and are preparing to face another team that shut them out during the regular season in their first-round district opponent Orchard Farm.“We had a hard time matching them physically,” said Brooks. “Wright City put itself out of contention early on Friday, falling behind 15-0 less than two minutes into the game.Brentwood blocked a punt and immediately capitalized. On Wright City’s ensuing drive, it fumbled an option pitch and Brentwood promptly took advantage.“Before we knew it, we were already down by two touchdowns after making some mistakes,” said Brooks. “From there, it snowballed.”By halftime, the Wildcats trailed 36-0.“We couldn’t get any push up front,” explained Brooks. “They were too big physically, and we couldn’t ever get enough guys to the point of attack.”To complicate matters, Wright City was without its most valuable defensive player and leading rusher, Steven Soltysiak, among others.“Our guys battled, but had a lot of young kids in too,” said Brooks. He says the defensive statistics were actually an indicator of how successful Brentwood was on offense.Quarterback Kyle Tuepker racked up 10 tackles from his safety role — not exactly a good thing for the Wildcats.“He had to make a lot of stops in the secondary,” said Brooks. “It’s never good when your safety is having to get so involved with tackling.”Brentwood rushed for 272 yards on 34 carries, with Jacob Clay and Austin Koster averaging over 10 yards per touch. The Eagles went to the air just four times, completing three passes. But Wright City aided the scoring effort with turnovers, giving up another touchdown off a fumble recovery in the fourth quarter.“I really thought we would have to shorten to the game and keep their offense off the field to be successful,” said Brooks. “I didn’t expect it to get away from us that early.”He says they will focus on the task ahead, traveling to Orchard Farm on Friday.“We didn’t play exceptionally well on Friday, but we are much better and more complete team than we were the first time against Orchard Farm,” said Brooks. He is expecting to see progress exhibited in hopefully lessening the 32-0 result of Week Two’s meeting this time around.
