In the midst of a busy stretch, the Wright City baseball team was able to escape unscathed from the Orchard Farm Tournament, winning the championship on Saturday. The Wildcats went 3-0, winning a game on Friday, before closing with a pair of victories on Saturday.“It was a good weekend for us,” said Coach Shannon Wells.Wright City opened the tournament with a 7-6 win over the Washington junior varsity on Friday, in spite of having one of its weaker performances.“For the most part, we really didn’t play that well,” said Wells. “We had some errors early in the game that helped them score some runs, and a lot of their runs were because of mistakes we made.”The Wildcats used three runs in the sixth inning to put themselves in position for the win, before Chase Jones brought in Kyle Tuepker for the game-winner on a walk-off run.Austin Marsh got the start on the mound for Wright City.“He did a really good job of shutting down their batters,” said Wells.Wright City followed on Saturday with a 14-1 win over Orchard Farm, unloading seven runs in the fifth inning.“I thought that was probably one of the best games we’d played all year long,” said Wells. “We finally tied all aspects of the game together, and it really showed. Our pitching and defense was solid, and we hit the ball well.”Devin Telkamp gave up just two hits on the mound, with one of those being the Eagles’ lone score on a home run.“It’s always nice to beat Orchard Farm, because they’re generally a good team,” said Wells. In the tournament finale on Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats topped Elsberry 13-5.Wells says his team started off slow after having sitting around watching Elsberry go into extra innings during the previous contest.“The kids kind of cooled off a little, but we did come back around eventually,” said Wells. “We started hitting the ball really well again.”Dallas Deroy started on the mound, giving up a few early runs.“Our pitching was a little shaky to start off, but we turned it around,” said Wells.Adam North closed the game for the Wildcats, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four through three innings.“He’s starting to throw the ball really well, which is good,” said Wells, who adds that North appears to be fully healed following Tommy John elbow surgery.WILDCATS WIN TOURNEYDerrick Forsythe Photo.
