Wright City baseball wins Orchar Farm Tournament

With just three regular-season games remaining, the Wright City baseball team finds itself in unfamiliar territory. The Wildcats are staring a 20-win regular season in the face and have already amassed more wins than any of its predecessors over the past decade.Coach Shannon Wells’ team claimed its second trophy of the season, sweeping its way through the Orchard Farm Tournament on Saturday.“I think we’re starting to see all the aspects of our game come together,” said Wells. “The past few games we’ve been playing error-less defense.”With district seeding fast approaching, the Wildcats are hopeful they have done enough to convince coaches they deserve a top ranking among a competitive field. It may be the difference between Wright City winning its first district title since 2006 or making the routine early exit.“I really believe we should be a No. 1 or 2 seed,” said Wells. “We haven’t played any of our district teams, but if they go by record, we should be fine.”Wells believes the Wildcats’ body of work speaks for itself, with Wright City having defeated a talented pool of teams to open the season in the Four Rivers Classic. The latest addition to that resume included wins over an Eastern Missouri Conference opponent and two GAC North teams. The victories came in a variety of formats — from nailbiter to blowout. The Wildcats opened with a 6-2 win over Elsberry on Friday, relying on a no-hitter by sophomore Michael Holmes through six innings.“He pitched well and really kept them off balance,” said Wells.Wright City led 6-0 heading into the top of the seventh, before surrendering a pair of runs with senior Donnie Burbank pitching in relief. Only one of those was earned, as the Wildcats surrendered just two hits and walked a total of six batters.Junior Chase Jones went 3-for-3 and was responsible for three RBIs, improving his batting average to a team-best .461.“Chase has been really consistent for us, driving in a lot of runs and finding his way around the base paths,” said Wells. On Saturday, the Wildcats held off Orchard Farm 4-3 in extra innings.Junior Kyle Tuepker delivered the game-winning hit with a walk-off double after the Wildcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth.“We were able to stay in the game long enough until we got some hits,” said Wells.Trailing 3-1 entering the seventh, junior Troy Muse had sparked a rally for Wright City. He singled, stole a pair of bases and eventually scored on a throwing error. As he had done on multiple occasions this season, junior Donovan Mozee came up with a timely home run to notch the game at 3-3.Wells says Mozee’s importance has been evident and how well they’ve performed recently as opposed to the struggles they faced while he was recovering from a pulled hamstring.“It really hurt our offensive production when he went out,” said Wells. “Had we had him in the lineup, we’d probably be looking at a few more wins.”Tuepker started on the mound against Orchard Farm, striking out six, walking nine and giving up four hits through six innings.Sophomore Justin Bote entered in relief, whiffing four batters and walking one, while allowing two hits. The final contest of the tournament proved to be much easier for the Wildcats, as they dropped Liberty 11-1.The Eagles scored first, but Wright City strung together runs in five consecutive innings, including a game-ending five in the sixth.Tuepker and Bote each recorded three RBIs on two hits during the rout.Senior Devin Telkamp pitched a full game, striking out eight and walking two, while giving up five hits.“Telkamp was good pitching and we had no errors in that game,” said Wells. “It made it real easy to win.”WILDCATS CONTINUE ROLLINGDerrick Forsythe photo.
