Things didn’t start so well for the Wright City baseball team on Wednesday, but they sure ended that way.
After giving up two runs to lose a lead against Eastern Missouri foe Bowling Green, the Wildcats rebounded for the 3-2 win at home.
The decisive run came with the game tied in the bottom of the fifth inning when a Cameron Moyer single scored Kayden McCurdy, who had tripled earlier in the inning.
Moyer, along with Tyler Martin, each had a pair of hits in the win. Fin Parra had the game’s other RBI for the Wildcats.
Logan Rose earned the win for the Wildcats (12-8).
“It was a hard-fought game, and we were happy to come out on top,” Wildcats Coach Cody Bair said. “Logan did a great job on the mound and we were able to scratch enough runs across to get the win.”
The win keeps Wright City in the midst of a tight Eastern Missouri Conference race as the season winds down. The team is one of three at the top of the standings. North Callaway and Montgomery County are the other conference schools with a single league loss.
“There are three teams in the conference with one conference loss so far in the season and we are one of those teams,” Bair said. “We have three conference games remaining.”
The team has a quick turnaround today, taking on EMO foe Clopton at home at 4:30 p.m.
ORCHARD FARM’S BIG INNING DOOMS WARRENTON – A seven-run second inning ultimately proved to be the undoing for the Warrenton baseball team.
The Warriors dropped the 13-3 decision to the Eagles in five innings on the road.
Jake Kirkpatrick drew a bases-loaded walk to give Warrenton (10-9) a short-lived lead in the top of the second.
Kirkpatrick suffered the loss on the mound.
The two teams will play again at 4:30 p.m. today, this time at Warrenton.
WRIGHT CITY SOCCER TEAM TAKES DOWN UNBEATEN BRENTWOOD IN PENALTIES – It was a big day for the Wright City girls’ soccer team.
Not only did the team celebrate its senior night, but it did so by getting past the Brentwood Eagles (10-1) by a 4-2 penalty tally after regulation and overtime finished tied 3-3.
“It feels really good, especially to do it on senior night, which made it that much more special,” Wright City Coach Tori Harris said. “We have such a good group of girls who are consistently putting in 100-percent effort. They gave it their all last night against a good Brentwood team.”
After a pair of goals from Haley Elsenrath and another from Madison Goodman, Wright City earned the win in penalties. Elsenrath also assisted on Goodman’s goal. Through 13 games, Elsenrath has 17 goals and 16 assists for the Wildcats.
Marli Burkhardt earned the win in goal for Wright City.
Harris said the win came after the Wildcats’ defense stymied Brentwood’s Kensington Curd, who has 38 goals this season.
“We denied Brentwood by putting pressure on their leading goal scorer,” Harris said. “We knew that she had speed on her and she was hurting us big time. So, we needed to make adjustments for the second half, and the girls executed the plan. I felt like the second half and on was our game.”
Wright City (9-4) will host St. Louis Christian at 4:30 p.m. today.
