When: Friday, Nov. 6Where: Centralia High School, 849 S. Jefferson St., Centralia.Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: Wright City — Jeff Sargent. Centralia — Erle Bennett.Records: Wright City — 8-3. Centralia — 10-1.Last year’s meeting: Did not play.Outlook: This is the first meeting between the schools and this time the district championship is on the line. Both squads enter Friday’s contest riding five-game winning streaks. Centralia has outscored its opponents 361-104 this season, with its lone loss coming in a 27-0 setback to Mexico, a Class 4 school. The only common opponent for the teams this year is Orchard Farm. The Panthers dominated the Eagles in a 49-7 rout last Friday in the district semifinal. They amassed 463 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers in the victory.Wright City, meanwhile, fell 14-12 to Orchard Farm in the season’s second week, a game that likely should have gone the other way.Centralia will look to do most of its damage on the ground with a variety of players getting touches. Junior running back Klay Marty has rushed for nearly 800 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He is coming off a 10-carry, 92-yard performance versus Orchard Farm. He scored four touchdowns in the win.At quarterback, senior Nick Romine has rushed for over 600 yards and thrown for over 400 yards. Three other players have at least 40 carries this season for the Panthers. At times this season the Wright City defense has been overshadowed by the offense’s gaudy numbers, but Friday’s game will come down to whether or not the Wildcats can stop Centralia. Senior linebackers Austin Buchheit and Kyle Tuepker have over 130 tackles this year, while David Ortega and Jaime Malta have been strong pressuring opposing quarterbacks with seven and six sacks, respectively.Offensively, senior wide receiver Troy Muse has yet to be stopped, with 58 receptions for 1,142 yards. He is tied with senior running back DeRenzo Blanks for the team lead with 15 touchdowns. Senior quarterback Andrew Pfuhl has thrown for 2,344 yards with 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, while Blanks has rushed for 1,324 yards. The winner of Friday’s game will advance to the sectional round where either Fulton or Blair Oaks awaits.Bottom Line: Wright City will likely have its hands full this Friday as Centralia has a program that is highly respected across the state. However, as mentioned many times this season, the Wildcats’ skill players pose a threat to any opponent and have the ability to turn a small play into a big one. To win, Wright City will need its best all-around performance of the season.—By Tim Schmidt, Record Managing EditorWildcats
