Wright City and Warrenton boys basketball to meet Friday night

The Wright City and Warrenton boys basketball teams will meet for the first time in two seasons Friday night at Wright City.

It will be the first regular season meeting between the programs since 2011, when Warrenton won, 57-37.

Wright City has won the previous two meetings in tournaments.

“It’s going to be a big game for us as a cross-town rivalry, but Warrenton kind of scares me,” Wright City Head Coach Ken Brown said earlier this week. “Not because I don’t think we’ll be ready, but I don’t want us to get too excited and get out of our ballgame.”

The Wildcats will be without guards Trey Saddler and Ty Curtis, who graduated.

Warrenton will have its top four scorers back, but both Brown and Warrenton Head Coach Mike Uffmann believe they have the experience to win.

Both coaches have preached getting the ball inside, where Warrenton expects to have the advantage.

Junior Caleb Strauss and senior Trevor Alberternst averaged a combined 20 points and 20.7 rebounds last season.

Wright City returns forward Dakota Phillips, who averaged 6.3 points last season.

Junior guard Devon Holmes is the top scorer returning for the Wildcats.

Holmes averaged 12.3 points as a sophomore, and Brown hopes he can pick up some of the scoring slack left by Curtis and Saddler.

“I want us to control our emotions, but it’s going to be a good test for us against a bigger school as we begin our season,” Brown said. “I think we should be up for the challenge. It’s going to be a big game for us, and it might be a bigger game for them because I’m sure they don’t want to lose to us. We’ve beaten them the past few games, so I think they’ll be on a revenge tour and they’ll be ready for us.”

Wright City won the 2014-15 meeting at the Hermann Tournament, 47-41, as well as the 2013-14 matchup in the Clopton Tournament, 65-56.

“There are pros and cons to playing them that early, but no matter when you play them, it’s going to be an awesome atmosphere because of the rivalry,” Uffmann said. “It should be a packed gym, and hopefully we can put on a good performance for them.”
