Wright City is among Missouri’s 20 safest cities, according to home security firm SafeWise.
Wright City landed at number 16 on the list, which is published every year. The city improved from the number 34 spot last year.
“As mayor of Wright City it makes me even more proud of our police department and our officers. It is also a credit to our citizens and our businesses for their commitment to make our city safe,” said Mayor Dan Rowden.”
With a population of more than 3,500, Wright city is Warren County’s second-largest municipality.
“This award as one of the top 20 safest cities in Missouri is quite an honor and furthers the growth of the city,” said City Clerk Karen Girondo, who is a lifelong resident and a member of city staff for over 40 years.
“People want to live where it is safe,” she continued. “Add this award to the school district’s success and with affordable housing, (this) makes Wright City a great place to live.”
The safety rankings are based on FBI crime report statistics from 2015. They included cities with more than 3,000 residents.
The statistics track the rates of violent crime and property crime, compared to the number of people living in each city.
Wright City experienced a rate of 1.44 violent crimes per thousand residents during the year studied. Property crimes — things like burglary and theft — were counted at 12.37 per thousand residents.
Wright City Police Chief Matt Eskew said the report is a helpful tool for gauging the effectiveness of law enforcement strategies and planning for the future.
“This is a result of proactive policing and positively engaging our community. I am proud of our Officers and their commitment to keeping the community safe,” Eskew said.
The chief also thanked law enforcement departments with Warren County, Warrenton, Truesdale, Foristell and the State Highway Patrol for their contributions.
“Their support definitely plays a role in the safety of our community.”
Two cities in neighboring St. Charles County also made the list of safest cities. Cottleville was at number two, with 0.73 violent crimes and 4.39 property crimes per thousand resident. O’Fallon was ranked 14th, with 0.65 violent crimes and 11.96 property crimes per thousand residents.
