The Wright City Board of Aldermen unanimously approved a site plan, conditional use permit and a boundary adjustment plat for Centraz Industries Inc., a manufacturer of cleaning products and specialty chemicals during their March 26 meeting.
The proposed facility would be on South Stringtown Road on a seven-acre lot. According to the site plan the lot would be subdivided into two lots with the western side of the lot consisting of 3.12 acres. This lot would be the location of the Centraz facility, while the eastern side would be used for stormwater retention. The approval of a CUP was necessary because the facility will store rubbing alcohol, which requires a permit under the city’s zoning regulations pertaining to hazardous chemicals. As part of the three approvals it was also discussed that Centraz and a neighboring property owner have agreed to dedicate land for a future roadway between the two properties. It is anticipated that move-in for the facility will be within one year.
The board also unanimously approved a CUP for Justin Ashcraft doing business as Poolside Living at 277 East Service Road North. Ashcraft said he wanted to build a new pool business on a property that has a current existing building, but has not been used for some time. Ashcraft said he builds pools, firepits and other accompanying items. He said he has been in business for three years and is looking to start building later this year. His plan involves renovating the current building with several major upgrades and expansion of the existing facility.
The board also unanimously approved a CUP for M. Turpin Properties to build a duplex at 309 East North 4th St. The property is in a commercially zoned corridor and because of that, a CUP and occupancy permits are required for residential use of the property.
The board also approved a CUP for Reed’s Rockets for a seasonal firework stand to be located at 425 West Service Road. The board also approved a CUP for the operation of the Kiwanis Club of Wright City’s Sports Closet.
The board also continued its discussion from its previous meeting regarding a fireworks show to be held near the Fourth of July. At the board’s previous meeting concerns were raised about using taxpayer dollars to fund a fireworks show. The same concerns were raised at the March 26 meeting, but it was noted that since the last meeting Grace Hauling had agreed to donate $5,000 for a show anticipated to cost around $10,000. The board discussed putting out a request for donations at differing levels and allowing banners for contributors to be displayed during the show. The aldermen discussed timing for putting the show out for requests for proposals. Alderman Ramiz Hakim said that the board needed to make a decision now to allow time to put the matter out for RFPs. He suggested committing $10,000 in city funds offset by the $5,000 from Grace and ensuring city officials seek donations to cover the whole $10,000.
“This board is highly criticized for wasting money,” Mayor Michelle Heiliger said.
Hakim said that he thought the criticism for previous fireworks shows was the quality not the cost. He noted that people who complain do so on social media from their “La-Z-Boys.”
The board ultimately voted to commit $10,000 in city funds for the fireworks show.
The board also voted to approve a special event permit for First Fridays on Main Street as well as a liquor license for Small Batch Winery.
