Wrestlers step up as Warrenton knocks off Union, Wright City

Warrenton wrestling coach Clayton Olsson praised his teams for their selfless efforts on Thursday.

He said that, especially on the girls' side, there were several wrestlers competing out of their comfort zones.

“We have girls wrestling out of their normal weight classes, wrestling up, just to get matches,” Olsson said. “It just shows how much they love to compete.”

That effort earned the girls a win in the team’s dual with Wright City. Even though both teams scored 24 points in the dual, the Warriors won on the tiebreaker of forfeiting just two matches to the Wildcats’ three.

Olsson pointed out the effort of senior Dakota Lohrmann, who wrestled up a weight class to 140 pounds. Even though she dropped the match by fall in 1 minute, 40 seconds to Wright City stalwart Sadie Sehnert, her simply taking to the mat was vital in the team victory.

“We’ve got kids (who weigh) in the 140s wrestling in the 150s just so we could give people matches,” Olsson said. “I was happy with the way we performed. They fought really well and the effort was there.”

Other results on the girls' side included: Wright City’s Victoria Riggs defeating Warrenton’s Meredith Donovan by fall at 2:43 and Warrenton’s Melanie Guerrero defeating Wright City’s Rebecca Riggs by fall at 3:03.

On the boys' side, Warrenton earned wins in its tri-meet over Union (by a 54-20 score) and Wright City (76-7).

Korben Johnson was the Warriors' only wrestler to see action in two matches and win them both. First, he beat Union’s Traven St. Clair by fall in 2:39 and then he got the best of Wright City’s Bentley Teubner in 1:12.

Another impressive win for the Warriors came at 132, where Zayden Teson beat Wright City’s Joseph Beitel by technical fall (17-0) at 1:41.

“I’m getting close to the school record for tech falls,” Teson said. “I’ve really been working hard as I progress throughout the season. I think it’s a mark that would be really great to have.”

Other winners for Warrenton included: Charles Larson at 106 over Union’s Landon Richardson by fall at 2:24; at 120, Colton Tinker over James Guinn by fall at 12 seconds; at 125, Cameron Alexander over Wright City’s Noah Baker by fall at 46 seconds; at 138, Cole Brakemeyer by fall over Wright City’s Wyatt Smith at 1:51; at 144, Jode Lohrmann over Wright City’s Ty Jarmuszkiewcz at 1:46; and at 157, Warrenton’s Max Teson over Wright City’s Jeremiah Wilson by technical fall at 2:36.
