Dogs and their people will “Raise the Woof” at a festival Aug. 22 in Wright City to earn funds to build a no-kill animal shelter.

The family-friendly Woofstock fest, which is in its fourth year, is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Diekroeger Park. Admission and activities are free; however, donations will be accepted. Dogs should be on non-retractable leashes.

Woofstock, named after the iconic August 1969 music festival, is sponsored by Concerned Citizens for Animal Care of Warren County. The group is raising funds to build an animal shelter halfway between Wright City and Innsbrook, at a site just west of the intersection of Highways M and F.

Organizers hope to have the shelter operating sometime during 2021, pending legal and governmental approval. Architectural renderings are being prepared, and $150,000 has been raised.

Wanda Thomas, group spokesperson, said social distancing will be followed along with hand sanitizer being available.

“Because of COVID-19, there could be fewer attendees this year – or there could be more. All events will be outside, so that should also help,” she said.

In addition, staff and vendors have been asked to wear masks, but they are not required.

Events scheduled include:

• Wiener dog contest

• Peticures (nail trim)

• Agility course

• Lookalike contest (dog/owner)

• Microchipping

• Grooviest costume

Games, including face painting, will be offered for children, plus pet-related (and non-pet related) items for sale from the 20 vendors expected.

Food includes funnel cakes and popcorn; hamburgers and hot dogs will be cooked by the Wright City Fire Department. Alcohol will not be sold or allowed to be brought into the festival. DJ J-Money 314 will provide music from the 1960s, especially from the Woodstock era.

Three rescue groups – the Sheba Inu Japanese hunting dog, SAMS (Simply Amazing Mutts Sanctuary) from Foristell and the St. Charles County Pet Adoption Center – will have animals for adoption at the Rescue Village. In addition, several Chick-Fil-A gift cards and Coca-Cola products will be given away; a 50/50 raffle will be offered, as well.
