A winery and brewery could be the newest business that draws traffic to downtown Warrenton.Bob Truetken was at the Warrenton Planning and Zoning meeting Jan. 5 seeking approval for his proposed venue, Deerfield Winery. The winery would be at the site of the former Stewart’s Drug store at 227 E. Booneslick Road.Truetken said he plans to offer wine that he brews himself. He also would sell craft beer brought in from around the Midwest until he gets his own brewery “up to speed.”The planning and zoning commission approved the winery’s site plan and conditional use permit, with members expressing enthusiasm for the new business. The next step is to receive final approval from the city’s board of aldermen.Truetken said his deal to close on the property is contingent on that vote. If approved, he hopes to open in April or May.“I am very excited about being part of revitalizing downtown,” he said. “I’m hoping we bring a lot of foot traffic in, and that will encourage other shops to come in.”Truetken, a Warrenton area resident, said he has seen downtown become stagnant and wants to create a new downtown destination.Plans for the interior include couches, fireplaces and waterfalls, he said. Customers will be able to buy wine and beer by the glass, as well as wine by the bottle. The venue will be available to reserve for private events, Truetken said.
