Willy Mueller’s record night helps Liberty Christian soar

Willy Mueller had a tremendous night for himself and his team on Tuesday.

It was a record-breaking night on multiple fronts for the Liberty Christian boys basketball team.

In the 81-24 win over Rivers of Life Christian of Granite City, Ill., Mueller amassed 20 points and 28 rebounds.

The 28 rebounds are a new single-game record for the program, eclipsing the single-game mark of 25 from Caleb Fox in 2012. He also brought his career rebound total to 1,248, which surpassed Fox’s mark of 1,231, set from 2010-13.

“It feels great,” said Mueller of hitting the marks. “To be honest, I wouldn’t have hit the marks without my teammates, though. They helped me accomplish it. I know it’s taken hard work, but it’s also taken the help of my team.”

The effort brings Mueller’s averages up to a robust 17.4 points and 16.1 rebounds per game this season.

Bolstered by Mueller’s effort, Liberty Christian (15-5) opened the game on a 28-5 run over the course of the first quarter. The Eagles held firm control with the 47-12 halftime lead.

Liberty Christian coach Butch Clark said that Mueller hit yet another milestone early in the win.

“He hit a first-quarter free throw,” Clark said. “That put him over 1,400 career points. (It’s impressive that) he wound up breaking two school records tonight.”

To complement Mueller’s efforts, Liberty Christian was led by 22 points from junior guard Phoenix Obermann. He also added five steals and four assists.

Tommy Meyer was the third Liberty Christian player in double figures as he tallied 12 points to go along with five steals, four assists and four blocks.

Liberty Christian will next take to the court at 5:30 p.m. on Friday when the team travels to Bourbon (0-11).
