Wildcats let district opener slip away in extra innings

A back-and-forth affair in the district opener finally caught up to the Wright City softball team.

One inning after the Wildcats tied the game to force extra frames, Orchard Farm answered with a six-run eighth inning and hung on in a 12-9 triumph in the Class 3, District 2 Tournament opener for both teams.

The sixth consecutive loss ended Wright City’s season with an 8-13 record.

The second-seeded Wildcats had led 5-2 after the fourth inning. However, the seventh-seeded Eagles responded with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a one-run lead. Wright City still had some fight though, plating the tying run in the bottom half of the seven to force extra innings. They also scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth in a brief rally.

Tristen Head was a star at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two homers, six RBIs and three runs scored. Hannah Kendall and Abigail Vossen each had two hits in the loss. Kendall scored three runs and Emma Wegrzyn scored twice. Anna Russell scored the lone other run for Wright City.

Nicole Voigt led Orchard Farm’s 16-hit attack with two hits, four RBIs and three runs.

On the mound, Madison Hamlett suffered the loss. Of the nine runs she allowed, seven were earned. She struck out three and walked three. Emma Thomas gave up three runs, two earned. She struck out one and walked one.

Orchard Farm faced No. 3 Winfield in the district semifinals the next day where it loss 20-5. In Saturday’s championship game, No. 1 seed Bowling Green won the title with a 9-2 win over Winfield.

Bowling Green advanced to the sectional round where it hosted Perryville on Wednesday. Results were not available as of press time.
