A solid season for two Wright City cross country runners continued with medals at Saturday’s Eastern Missouri Conference Meet.

Junior Zoe Riggs placed third overall in the girls race, completing the 3.1-mile trek in 20 minutes, 18.50 seconds. On the boys side, junior Trent Bruning placed fourth in 17:59.06.

Both runners are now ready for the postseason stretch as they head back to the Pike County Fairgrounds this Saturday for the regular season finale and on Saturday, Oct. 31, for the Class 3, District 3 Meet. The Class 3 state meet is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5 in Columbia.

Riggs and Bruning are returning state qualifiers.

“Zoe and Trent both ran well at EMO,” Wright City coach Billy Garrett said. “Zoe was able to maintain a good pace throughout the race letting her pass several girls as the race continued. For her, maintaining a steady pace throughout the race is essential. Trent had a good race to finish fourth. His legs were a bit heavy, but he was still able to take nearly 20 seconds off his time from the same race last year.

“Both Zoe and Trent worked hard throughout the summer and we should continue to see the results of their work as we enter the postseason.”

Wright City had five other runners compete at the conference meet. Jackson Mazella placed 29th in 20:11.94, followed by Cailou Florian Muller-Williams in 30th in 20:28.01 and Aiden Brummet in 43rd in 24:20.80. In the girls race, Kaedyn Johnson placed 36th in 26:31.19 and Nicole Lotspeich was 40th in 31:32.59.

Montgomery County runners swept the individual conference titles. Junior Dawson McCown won the boys race in 17:00.16, while sophomore Lyric Ford took first in 19:33.34.

In the team standings, Bowling Green won the boys title and North Callaway captured the girls crown.
