Wildcats fall short in district semis

Wright City’s softball season ended on a tough note on Oct. 20.

The Wildcats fell 4-3 to top-seeded Blair Oaks in a Class 3, District 2 semifinal game at Owensville. Wright City had a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh before the Falcons came back with two runs in the inning to pull off the win.

“It’s one of the better games we’ve played this year for sure,” Wright City coach Fred Ross said. “Defensively, we played very, very well and made some key plays and Ava (Swaringen) pitched awesome.”

The Wildcats ended their season at 12-18. They advanced to the district semifinals for the third year in a row and finished with their third straight 12-win season.

Wright City advanced to the semifinals with a 15-0 win over St. James in three innings in a quarterfinal game on Oct. 15. Swaringen pitched a no-hitter in that contest.

The Wildcats scored all of their runs in the top of the first. They had just two hits in the contest. Lorelai Kellner got both of the hits.

“We just couldn’t get that two out hit (against Blair Oaks),” Ross said. “The infield got beat on an infield single and it was just tough. They are a good team and the number one seed and we gave them everything we had, so I’m very proud of the girls.”

Ross said his team had to make some defensive adjustments in a game that was played under windy conditions.

“We talked about coming into balls on a dive and our outfield is pretty good on that, so we’re pretty happy about that,” Ross said.

Ross said despite the loss to Blair Oaks, his team was upbeat.

“Our positive attitude was just great. All of our girls were cheering each other on and we had some at bats that weren’t so good and then we came out with some quality at bats,” the Wright City coach said.

Ross reflected on the senior class that included Sadie Sehnert, Hailey Swor, Torrie Perry, Aariah Robertson and manager Isabela Serrano.

“Those girls really helped the program and they were really good leaders in the dugout,” Ross said.

Ross said he has high hopes for his team in the 2026 season..

“I’ll have a bunch of returners next year that will really help out. Haley (Elsenrath) and Harper (Martin) are both freshmen and they came in and did an outstanding job. Little (Emalee) Swor came in and did some good things,” Ross said. “It was a team effort and we got better as the year went along, so hopefully we’ll get stronger this summer and build on it.”
