While the Wright City High School girls soccer team has struggled some in the early parts of this season, head coach Devin Raney sees plenty of positive things and believes that the best is yet to come.
With a 4-6 record on the year, the Wildcats’ results thus far aren’t necessarily a reflection on how things are actually going.
“I think our season has been going great. I do believe our record could be better,” said Raney. “There are a few games we lost that we probably should have won, but outside of the win/loss column, we really have had a lot of growth.”
Part of what has contributed to the 4-6 start is inexperience with soccer overall or inexperience in certain positions. This has the Wildcats set up to continue to improve as those players get more comfortable.
“I have several girls playing positions that aren’t their traditional positions,” Raney told The Record. “I have several girls who are starting soccer this year for the first time. So overall, I have seen a ton of growth in the girls, and am very happy with where we are at the moment.”
Leading the way for the Wildcats has been junior striker Hannah Kendall, who already has 11 goals on the year. Raney describes her as “one of the most tenacious players on the field every time she touches it.”
Sophomore striker Alex Sutter, who Raney says brings speed and awareness to the game, has eight goals and four assists on the year, while junior midfielder Ellie Rodriguez has also done her part to make a difference.
“She plays the entire field,” said Raney. “She has outstanding soccer intelligence and tenacity.”
Freshman defender Kailin Hawn has made her mark this season as well.
“She’s picking up the game extremely fast,” Raney told The Record. “Along with senior captains Alexus Bales and Amerie Henke on the back line.”
As far as the outlook for the remainder of the season, Raney fully believes that better things are on the horizon.
“We are going to win a lot more games this second half of the season, I can tell you that,” he said. “I see us making a deep run in districts.”
