By Patrick MacCoonRecord Sports EditorCrucial errors in the outfield turned out to plague what would have been a decent start for senior Wright City pitcher Brooke Vossen in an 11-3 Eastern Missouri Conference loss to North Callaway at home Tuesday evening. The loss for the Wildcats ended a three-game win streak and dropped their overall record to 3-3 and 1-1 in conference play.A pair of errors allowed six unearned runs to score off of Vossen, who allowed five earned runs and struck out three. The experienced right-handed pitcher hit her spots for the majority of the contest and recorded eight field assists from the mound."I was just glad we didn't get run ruled," Vossen said. "That has always been my pet peeve. I felt like I hit spots tonight and I understood from the start of this season that we have a lot of freshman playing for us in the field."Vossen doubled in the first inning and the Wildcats scored their first run after senior Savannah Bridges took home after a wild pitch, which cut the deficit to 2-1.In the third inning, Wright City misplayed a ball in right field and a wild throw later in the play would allow three runs to score for the Thunderbirds, including the batter, to take a comfortable 6-1 lead.Another error, this time in center field, in the sixth inning allowed three more runs to cross for North Callaway (4-0), who went ahead 11-1.The Wildcats avoided a shortened outing as junior Macy Evans came through with a run scoring single in the bottom of the sixth inning, which plated Vossen.Bridges drove in Janee Hill in the seventh as her bloop single fell in front of the center fielder, who did not contest the fast runner.Wright City's offense strung together eight hits.Hunter, who hit in the leadoff spot, went 2-for-4 and stole a base while Hill was 2-for-3 in the ninth spot and stole a base and scored."I was pleased with our offense," Head Coach Fred Ross said. "Jada hit the ball as well as she has all year and we only struck out three times against one of the top teams in the conference. Our offense is coming along, we just have to clean things up on defense."Vossen finished 1-for-3 with the only extra base hit for the Wildcats.Wright City will next play on the road against Montgomery County this Thursday at 5 p.m.See the complete version of this story in Thursday's Warren County Record.
