With the April 3 municipal elections over, voters can now turn their attention to the Aug. 7 primary.Candidate filing for open county and state level offices ended March 27.In addition to U.S. senator and representative positions and state auditor elections, 12 Warren County and regional representative offices are up for election this year.Several offices attracted more than one competitor vying for the Republican Party nomination. Candidates in those contested races will face off in the August primary to determine whose names will appear on the general election ballot in November.Out of the runningVoters may be surprised by who’s missing from their choice of candidates.Wes Dalton, presiding judge of the 12th Circuit Court, is not running to retain his seat, and County Clerk Barb Daly and Clerk of the Circuit Court Brenda Eggering also did not file for re-election.County racesWarren County Presiding Commissioner Roger R. Mauzy Sr., a Republican, faces a challenger for the Aug. 7 Republican primary. Mauzy, a Warrenton resident, is being challenged for the Republican nomination for presiding commissioner by Joe Gildehaus of Marthasville. The winner of that race will face off in November against David J. Hubbard, who resides in eastern Warren County and is unopposed for the Democratic nomination.Recorder of Deeds Deborah L. Engemann is being challenged by Linda J. Gant to be the Republican contender for the seat in the November election. No one filed for the Democratic nomination.Two attorneys are seeking the judgeship currently held by Wes Dalton as presiding circuit judge of the 12th Circuit Court. Jason Lamb of Mexico will run against Tim Joyce of Warrenton in the primary. Both attorneys filed as Republicans. There is no Democratic nominee.No primary challengersA number of county offices had only one candidate file for an open seat. Barring any late entries for candidacy for any of these positions, these uncontested candidates are presumed winners.Denise Stotler of Warrenton filed for county clerk, the seat currently held by Barb Daly, and Timothy C. Beard of Warrenton filed for clerk of the circuit court held by Brenda Eggering.Other county officials uncontested for re-election are Associate Circuit Judge (Division Two) Richard Scheibe; Associate Circuit Judge (Division Three) Mike Wright; County Treasurer Jeff Hoelscher; Prosecuting Attorney Kelly King; and Collector of Revenue Julie Schaumberg.State officesFor broader state-level positions, two people are in the race for the Republican nomination to replace State Rep. Bart Korman, who cannot run again due to term limits. Korman’s 42nd District seat represents Montgomery County and parts of Warren and St. Charles counties.Jessica Catron of Warrenton and Jeff Porter of Montgomery City are seeking the Republican nomination. Whoever succeeds will move on to the November ballot against Joseph Widner of Montgomery City. Widner is running for the Democratic nomination unopposed.Two other state representatives won’t be facing any challengers in the primaries, but will have competition come the November general election.Bryan Spencer, the Republican representative seeking re-election in House District 63, will have opponents from two parties running against him. District 63 includes Wright City, Innsbrook, Wentzville and other areas of Warren and St. Charles counties.The candidates registered to run against Spencer are Democrat Janet Kester of Wentzville, and Libertarian Carl-Herman Freese of Foristell.The District 10 state senate seat that represents Warren County and a number of other counties is also up for election. Incumbent Sen. Jeanie Riddle, a Republican from Callaway County, will run against Democratic challenger Ayanna Shivers, a resident of Mexico in Audrain County.Warren County Administration BuildingRecord photo
