Warrenton tops St. Charles in OT
Celebration erupted among the Warrenton football team as Dillen Mayfield's extra point attempt sailed through the uprights to cap off a 21-20 overtime win for the Warriors over St. Charles on Friday.
Overcoming a dismal first half that saw him throw two interceptions and fumble at the one-yard line, senior quarterback Braydan Chmiel found redemption on a five-yard touchdown run to notch the game at 20-20. With St. Charles having missed its extra point attempt on the first overtime drive, the outcome relied on Mayfield.
The Warriors had never let their visiting GAC foe get out of reach, trailing just 7-0 at the half. Chmiel scored on a short run to lock the game at 7-7 after the third period. St. Charles regained control with 2:26 remaining, but the Warriors promptly marched down the field on their next drive. Chmiel hooked up with Jacob Abel on a 15-yard touchdown pass to force overtime.
Warrenton improved to 3-1 and will travel to St. Charles West next week.
