Last Year’s Meeting: Warrenton 28, Troy 0For the first time since a 40-0 win over St. Charles West on Oct. 28, 2010, Warrenton posted a shutout.Led by senior linebackers Trevor Reese, who recovered a fumble, and George Wielms, who posted a team-high eight tackles, the Trojans offense was shutdown. The only time they threatened was on the first drive, which resulted in a missed field goal.Senior quarterback Ryan Bradshaw completed 10-of-14 passes for 189 yards and a season-high two touchdowns. Junior receiver Hunter Russell climbed over the century mark for a second straight week as he caught three passes for 104 yards and scored twice. Russell’s scores came from 27 and 63 yards out. Zach Logan finished with 68 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Outlook: Before the season began, Warrenton appeared set on running the football at a greater rate than the program had in quite a while. However, the emergence of senior quarterback Braydan Chmiel might keep the Warriors offense more balanced. In a hard fought 28-26 victory over St. Dominic in the season opener, Chmiel completed 20-of-26 passes for a career-high 231 passing yards and two touchdowns.Warrenton executed in both phases of its offense as the run game had 31 carries for 164 yards. Steve McDowell will continue his run-first approach, but is glad to know his team has a trusted passing game as well.Cameron Richardson provides a huge spark in the backfield and will look to be relied upon heavily. The junior tailback rushed for 136 yards in his first game with the Warriors, which had no individual rusher run for 100 yards last season.A return of senior receiver Justin McBroom will be a big addition to the passing game, which saw big performances from Jacob Abel (eight receptions, 62 yards) and Russell (five catches, 119 yards, three touchdowns) on Friday.Warrenton’s defense is led by Jacob Null (13 tackles), Abel (11 tackles) and Kenny Bonzo (sack, field goal block).
The Bottom Line: Both Troy and Warrenton would describe themselves as run-first-oriented attacks. The Trojans ran the ball 54 times for 239 yards in a 34-6 loss to Fort Zumwalt North last week.Open-field tackling will be a decisive factor in this matchup as both will try to wear one another out on the ground. If Chmiel can continue his poise behind center and create for big plays through the air to add to the running game yet again, the Warriors should be well on their way to a 2-0 start.Warrenton is 4-2 in its last six road contests.
Steve McDowell's Warriors will look to improve to 2-0 to start the season as they play a second straight road game. Troy will look to run the ball a solid amount in its Flex Bone offense.
