Webb named commandant, CEO of Marine Corps League

Warrenton resident and Tribute to Veterans Memorial Director Wendell W. Webb was elected national commandant and chief executive officer at the 94th National Marine Corps League Convention held the week of Aug. 14 in Overland Park, Kan.“It is an honor and a privilege to be elected by my sisters and brothers who served in the U.S. Marine Corps,” said Webb.“Earning the title U.S. Marine changed our lives forever, and because of that, I have a blessed family, business career and now share my blessings with the organization I now lead as commandant and chief executive officer,” he said.Webb was installed at the change of command ceremony near the closing of the convention. He has a vision for the national organization.“One of my goals is to prepare the organization for sound nonprofit status to help our veterans and the community where needed by creating leadership by mentoring and growing the next officers of the League,” he said.Webb said the organization will reach out to Marine veterans under 50 who will take the Marine Corps League into its second century.The Marine Corps League was started by Maj. Gen. John A. Lejeune, who founded the Marine Corps League in 1923. Congress later chartered the Marine Corps League in 1937.Webb is a Vietnam veteran and has been a member of the Marine Corps League since 1991.The Marine Corps League is a nonprofit veterans service organization with over 65,000 members and several subordinate and independent subordinate organizations. Webb is a member of the subordinate organization, the Military Order of the Devil Dogs. The group donated $50,000 to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Overland Park, Kan.Webb is a liaison to FOCUS Marines Foundation in Augusta. FOCUS helps Marines and post-Sept. 11 veterans become active members of society and to realize their dreams and goals.He also serves on the board of directors of the Tribute to Veterans Memorial in Warren County as the historian and chairman of the building committee.Webb and his wife Carol moved to Warren County five years ago, after his retirement from The Boeing Company as chief scientist, technology.The Marine Corps League headquarters is located in Stafford, Va., next to Quantico Marine Base.
