We deserve it

We get the government we deserve. After three weeks of the turbulent Trump presidency, that oft-cited political phrase comes to mind. Specifically, the H. L. Mencken version of the quote: “People deserve the government they get, and they deserve to get it good and hard.” Boy are we ever getting it good and hard. We elected a reality TV show host and we are being treated to a reality TV show spectacle. It gets more cringeworthy with each passing petty tweet or outright lie from the host. We knew we were getting an unconventional leader in Trump. But has this country ever had a president who just makes things up as callously and flagrantly as Trump? Millions of people voted illegally? The murder rate in our country is the highest it’s been in 47 years?Sure, presidents have stretched the truth before, but as Politico recently noted, Donald Trump is in a different category. The sheer frequency, spontaneity and seeming irrelevance of his lies have no precedent. He sets the high-water mark and he’s barely begun his term. But we knew that. We were willing to overlook that. We were willing to put that aside and look the other way because he was the outsider business reformer who was going to drain the swamp in Washington, cure all that ails our country and make America great again. He was the only candidate who could do that. Oh, and he wasn’t Hillary. The fact that the chief executive officer of the most powerful nation in the world and the leader of the free world believes he can lie with impunity is deeply troubling but it isn’t the real cause for concern. No one expected a Trump administration to be business as usual but neither did we expect him to be this inept. Undisciplined for sure, but incompetent? That wasn’t the deal we bargained for when we hired the master of the art of the deal. The wheels are coming off the Make America Great revolution because the leader doesn’t know how to drive. That is our take after three weeks on the job. To be fair, every new administration has its share of growing pains and “rookie mistakes” but Trump’s shoot first ask questions later isn’t a characteristic of a savvy business CEO. His penchant for unforced errors is unravelling his presidency. It isn’t the media, or the Democrats. It’s Trump revealing himself as a rank amateur when it comes to running something as vast and complex as the federal government.Even when Trump makes a solid decision, like nominating Judge Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court, he undermines it by attacking the federal judge who ruled against his immigration order in an errant tweet. That forced his own nominee to respond by calling the comments “demoralizing” and “disheartening.” By any measure, Trump is off to a lousy start. The bravado and showmanship that got him elected have given way to a clumsiness and ineptitude that is stunning for someone who has made a fortune in the private sector. He is squandering the mandate for change that got him elected by his own incompetence. We voted for change. We voted for an outsider. We elected a reality TV show host for president. Maybe we deserve what we get.
