Warriors Thrive On Depth in Speed Department

Coach Steve McDowell has speed at his disposal, and plenty of it. Despite having one of their fastest runners sidelined with an injury, the Warriors have still been untouchable in the sprint events. “It’s a good problem to have,” said McDowell. “It’s fun trying to figure out where everybody fits in best.” Sophomore Jordon Washington is expected to return to the track this week but missed last Thursday’s Wright City Wildcat Invitational. “He’ll shave some time off in several of our events,” said McDowell. In the meantime, the Warriors will win with other underclassmen. Warrenton tied Orchard Farm for first place, amassing 89 points. “It was another good overall showing for us,” said McDowell. “Last night really gave us a good idea of where we’re at.” The Warriors excelled in the most challenging of conditions, battling cold piercing winds and wet conditions. “With the conditions being the way they were, there weren’t going to be any PR’s set,” said McDowell. At least he thought. Junior Brian Lanigan decided to defy the odds, recording a new personal best in the triple jump. He won the event, clearing 39 feet, 11.5 inches. “We know he’s capable of getting in that top three or four at times,” said McDowell. “To come out at No. 1, it was a very pleasant surprise.” Lanigan landed one of the Warriors’ three first-place finishes. The 400- and 800-meter relay teams, consisting of seniors Devin Ray and Cloud Wharton, along with freshman Drake Wagner and Justin McBroom, also accomplished the feat. “They did a fantastic job again,” said McDowell. Ray also excelled in the open races, finishing second in both the 100- and 200-meter races. Wagner took third in the 200-meter. “Those guys got us a lot of points,” acknowledged McDowell. He and McBroom have emerged onto the scene as immediate impact athletes. “It’s unbelievable what those kids have been able to do,” said McDowell. “It’s good to have the speed that we do, and our handoffs have also been smooth so far this year.” Senior Nick Wallace also earned a pair of medals, finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. Brett Garrison placed fourth in the discus, while fellow senior Jeff Reese took fourth in the shot put. Caleb Hodgson finished fourth in the pole vault. The Warriors will compete in the Zumwalt North Invitational on Friday.
