Warriors Take Fourth at Tournament

The Warrenton girls basketball team could never find the remedy for slowing down Granite City's versatile attack during a 49-39 loss in the third-place game of the Orchard Farm Tournament on Friday. Entering the contest, coach Barb Woodruff had concerns about how the Warriors would contain talented guard Natalie O'Keefe, who finished with 13 points. "She was like a one-man wrecking crew and was getting penetration and kicking," said Woodruff. "We couldn't keep her out of the middle." While O'Keefe did create problems with her scoring and dishing, it was Granite City's rebounding effort on the offensive glass that Woodruff felt separated the teams. "My biggest fear when we started was that we're going to give up too many offensive rebounds, because we're not physical enough," said Woodruff. "And they got seven offensive rebounds and scored on all of them." Warrenton showed resilience throughout the game, overcoming a 7-1 deficit in the first quarter to fight back and take a 14-10 advantage by the end of the period. Woodruff credited part of that to contributions by a freshman. "Hannah Sutton came off the bench and gave us a little spark," said Woodruff. "I thought she played a really good game defensively." Granite City reclaimed the lead, jumping ahead 31-24 at halftime after inconsistencies on the Warriors' behalf. "We had opportunities throughout the first half to pull ahead of them, but we kind of went into a lull in the second quarter," said Woodruff. "We have our lulls, and it's frustrating." Granite City opened the second half on an 8-0 run and led 42-34 heading into the final quarter. After falling behind by 14 points early in the fourth period, the Warriors began to rally, closing the gap to five with 5:51 remaining. But that's as close as it would get, as O'Keefe was too much of force with the ball. "They got up 14 on us in the fourth, and we got back within five," said Woodruff. "For four minutes in the fourth quarter, they didn't score. But we didn't reward ourselves after playing good defense."  Woodruff says her team will have to develop in its ability to close out games strong. "The kids showed character in coming back and getting to within five," said Woodruff."We've got the athletic ability and some shooters. We just don't have the mental toughness yet to finish games or to come back when we need it."
