Warriors Suffer Second Straight Shut Out

His offense has been painfully predictable while his inconsistent defense has left him boggled.Following his team’s second straight scoreless performance, Coach Steve McDowell says something has to give offensively.Despite the final result, he couldn’t fault his defense in a 22-0 loss against Mexico in Week Six.“I don’t have any complaints about how our defense played,” said McDowell. “I know the score isn’t really indicative, but I thought we did a pretty good job against them.”It was a refreshing notion, considering the Warriors’ abysmal performance at St. Charles West a week prior. But much like in that letdown, moving the ball proved to be an insurmountable challenge.Warrenton managed just 171 yards of total offense and again struggled through the air, throwing two interceptions.Perhaps more alarming is that the Warriors have yet to throw a single touchdown pass this season.“Going into Week Seven, we still haven’t been able to complete one,” lamented McDowell. “It’s definitely something we’re working on this week. We’re going to shorten our routes and try to find more consistency.”The Warriors stayed in contention against Mexico until the third quarter, trailing just 9-0 at halftime.A low snap went up for grabs in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs recovered for a safety. With 5:37 remaining in the second period, Mexico quarterback Tyler Bracht connected with Matt Beauchamp on a nine-yard score.Just over halfway through the third quarter, the Bulldogs scored on a 12-yard run and 50-yard pass play a minute apart.“When your defense is on the field all the time, you’re eventually not going to be able to stop them,” said McDowell. “We knew they would come in with a ground attack, and that’s exactly what they did.”Warrenton’s most promising drive ended in an interception, after Luke Darity bobbled the ball and a Mexico player managed to corral it on the way to the ground.McDowell says his team ran the ball better out of halftime, with Zach Logan leading the with 88 yards on 15 carries. Corey Eckenfels also toted the ball six times for 23 yards.Logan wasn’t at full strength, battling through an injury to connect on eight of 14 passes. He shared snaps with Braydan Chmiel, who completed four of seven passes for 17 yards.Ryan Bradshaw and Eckenfels each caught three passes. The Warriors were without starting running back Drake Wagner, who is also expected to miss this week’s game against Winfield.“We’re pretty hobbled up,” said McDowell. “We’ve got a lot of key players not out there.”
