Warrenton girls basketball team welcomed in a conference foe from Winfield on Friday night for their Courtwarming game.
The Lady Warriors may have started off slow, but put the pedal down for a big win against Winfield, ousting them 58-20.
“Slow start, we are kind of tired,” Head Coach Greg Williams said. “We just really weren’t ready to play and that’s on me.”
Warrenton may not have been ready to play but some halftime adjustments must have been made as it only allowed six points after the break.
“We finally got some things going,” Williams said. “We turned up the defense pressure and won the game there.”
Warrenton’s suffocating defense turned into offense as senior Brooke Smith led the charge with 15 points and her senior running mate Lexi Frederick added 14.
On Monday, the Lady Warriors couldn’t get much going and fell 74-22 on the road at Troy.
“Troy came out the aggressor,” Williams said. “They set the tone both offensively and defensively.”
The Lady Warriors struggled to get anything going all game. They trailed 17-9 after the opening quarter and were held to two points in the second period. Smith had a team-high 10 points. Garneisha Love followed with five points. As a team, they shot 23 percent from the field.
“We missed several easy opportunities early on and then the flood gates opened,” Williams said. “We turned it over, shot air balls, and made some defensive errors that led to easy scores.”
Although this wasn’t the outcome they wanted, Warrenton will have plenty of opportunities to bounce back the rest of the week as they have three games.
“You hate to get destroyed in this fashion, however, they get to come right back and play again,” Williams said. ”You would hate to let this linger for several days, so playing right away can help move us forward.”
The Lady Warriors hosted Orchard Farm on Tuesday night. They play at Winfield on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and return home Friday against St. Charles West.
