Warriors soccer team remain optimistic despite sitting on one win

Despite a 1-13 record on the year, the Warrenton boys soccer team has remained competitive and optimistic throughout the season. With his team 0-7 in conference play, coach John Schulte is able to find the positives in an otherwise tough campaign.

“We learned a lot last year and I expected us to have several wins at this point in the season. The kids have grown and learned a lot from the beginning of the year until now,” he said. “We have had several games that we lost by one goal and were very competitive. It has been frustrating for the players because they are working hard and we have played well but were unable to get the wins we were hoping for.”

There have also been some standout performances that are noteworthy, including from sophomore goalie Owen Thompson.

“Owen has done a great job in goal for us this year,” said Schulte. “This is Owen's first year as a starter and he’s been very solid for us. He is a leader on the team and helps direct the defense.”

Another sophomore, forward Bryan Guerrero, has also had a good year.

“Bryan is the captain of the team and works extremely hard on the field,” said Schulte. “He has a great soccer IQ and helps others around him get better. He is the leading scorer on the team and is doing a great job.”

Davin Cox, a junior forward, has been an important cog in a year in which he has moved around on the field.

“Davin started out the year as a defender but has moved into a forward spot,” Schulte said. “He has helped us control the ball around the goal and apply pressure on the other team's defense.”

Junior midfielders Santiago Cano and Hector Cortes have also been strong for the Warriors.

Another sophomore defender, Ethan Wilmes, has been a versatile player for the Warriors.

“Ethan has done a great job in any position he has been in this year,” said Schulte.

As the season enters the final stretch, Schulte is still optimistic that the best is yet to come.

“We have several more games left this year and I believe we can win most of them,” he said. “The players are working hard and we have been playing well the last few weeks. The players are hungry for some wins and have not given up this year.”
