Before the Warrenton boys basketball team could attend the Courtwarming dance, they had two obstacles to go through: a home conference game on Friday and a rescheduled contest on the road Saturday.
First, Warrenton welcomed Winfield, which was undefeated in conference play, on Friday night. However, the host Warriors held on for a 44-43 victory.
“We knew we were going to get a pretty good shot,” Head Coach Mark Thomas said. “We came out a little tight because we knew they were good, but really happy with the perseverance.”
Warrenton didn’t grab its first lead until the third quarter with 2:38 left, and claimed its final lead after a big three-pointer from senior Travis Toebben, to give them the 44-41 lead with just under two minutes left in the game.
After trying the stall game, Warrenton needed a last second defensive stop to capture the win over their conference foe.
“I’m just really excited for the guys to finally get a win because it’s been awhile,” Thomas said. “We’ve had about a week off so I’m sure they’re tired of practicing and tired of me at practice too.”
Warrenton, who earned their first conference win of the season, were led by senior Brett Smith, who had 17 points. Toebben chipped in 11 points to help pace Warrenton to victory.
Although Warrenton won a thriller at home, there was not much time to celebrate as they had a very quick turnaround.
“My guys will tell you, I’m not too worried about the fatigue factor,” Thomas said. “I’m more concerned about the bumps and bruises from this game.”
The Warriors traveled to Clopton on Saturday, a game that was supposed to be played on Wednesday but with weather in the forecast, the game was postponed.
Warrenton didn’t need a last second stop this time for the win as they defeated the Eagles 44-36 to improve to 9-11 on the year. Once again, the Warriors were led by Smith, who poured in 18 points. Toebben added 12 and fellow senior Sam Toenges chipped in with 10.
“The kids played hard but our defense needs to improve,” Thomas said. “Need to get back to practice and work on our timing and rotations.”
The Warriors have a busy week coming up with four games in seven days. They played Orchard Farm on Tuesday and hit the road Thursday at Winfield. They host St. Charles West on Friday and are back home Monday versus Washington.
