Record Managing EditorThe Warrenton boys soccer team couldn’t have asked for a tougher draw to start the postseason.Perennial power St. Dominic awaited in the first round of the Class 3, District 8 Tournament on Oct. 27.Though the Warriors battled tough and fought to a scoreless tie in the first half, they eventually fell 4-0 to the host Crusaders.Warrenton ended the season with a 7-15-1 record“All in all, I think we played pretty well,” Head Coach John Schulte said. “First half, we did a great job limiting their opportunities. We gave them some shots, some headers at the top of the box. We did a great job getting in their way and making sure they did not get anything easy.”The Warriors had just three shots on goal in the loss, while senior goalie Sawyer Junker made 12 saves.Collin Baker earned the shutout for St. Dominic in goal. Jack Stoll had all four goals for the Crusaders, while Collin Chrun assisted on two of the scoring plays. Will Faherty and Connor Flynn also had assists in the win.“When you are playing a team that is that good, you have to play really solid defense,” Schulte said. “We had to make sure we stayed in front of people and not to dive in. We wanted them to earn it and I think we did a good job for the most part.”Schulte was proud of how his team competed this year. Despite losing Junker for a big chunk of the season, Warrenton managed to win four of its final eight games. The Warriors started the year with just one win in their first nine contests. The program will lose some talented seniors, including the school’s all-time leading scorer Dillen Mayfield, Tyler Busken and Junker, but a strong nucleus will return next year.“We have a lot of juniors on the team,” Schulte said. “At the beginning of the season, we talked about progressing. We talked about getting better and I think we did that.”St. Dominic wound up beating Liberty 5-0 in the district title game Oct. 29. Stoll recorded a hat trick in the win and Faherty scored twice. The Crusaders, who have won districts for the past two years since being bumped up to Class 3, led 2-0 at halftime.St. Dominic (14-10-2) was scheduled to face Fort Zumwalt South in the Class 3 sectionals on Tuesday night. The winner will face either Ladue or Parkway West in the quarterfinal round Nov. 7.
