The Warrenton girls basketball team earned the No. 2 seed in the 2016 Warrenton Winter Classic, and will face No. 7 Hannibal Monday at 4 p.m.
“We feel real fortunate and blessed to get the No. 2 seed,” Warrenton Head Coach Greg Williams said. “We saw them in the jamboree and they played pretty well against us.”
Hannibal comes into the tournament with a 4-6 record, and the teams have played one common opponent thus far.
Hannibal lost to Mexico, 51-43, Dec. 18.
Warrenton defeated Mexico — which earned the No. 6 seed in the Warrenton Winter Classic — on the same court, 40-39 Saturday in the Gary Filbert Classic.
Williams thinks his team’s size and experience will be big factors in the tournament opener.
“For some of these girls, this is their third tournament,” he said.
Monday’s winner will play No. 3 Howell Central, or get a rematch with Mexico.
Duchesne earned the No. 1 seed with an undefeated record to date.
The Pioneers have won 8 of 11 games by double digits, and are led by senior forward Katie Sportsman (14.7 points, 7.3 rebounds) and junior forward Natalie Schroeder (10.2 points, 7.3 rebounds).
Warrenton lost to Duchesne in the championship last year.
“We’d like to do a little bit better this year,” Williams said. “But anybody can get upset in this thing. There is some pretty good competition.”
