By Kory CarpenterRecord Sports EditorThe Warrenton football team capped off a 6-5 playoff season with eight players making the All-Great American Conference North teams.Led by senior quarterback Brayden Chmiel, four players were named to the all-conference first team.Chmiel was a first-team athlete selection after totaling 2,080 all-purpose yards and accounting for 26 touchdowns. He completed 60 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,465 yards and 12 touchdowns, and ran for another 615 yards and 14 touchdowns.“We created this athlete position for the conference, and we knew if he didn’t make it as a quarterback, he would be first-team as an athlete,” Warrenton Head Coach Steve McDowell said.Joining Chmiel on the first-team offense is senior wide receiver Hunter Russell, who led the Warriors with 645 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.“I think he had about 20 yards per catch,” McDowell said. “So you can see how he helped us in the spread offense.”Junior running back Cameron Richardson (second team) and senior wide receiver Jacob Abel (second team) rounded out the all-conference honors for the Warrenton offense.Richardson was first on the team among running backs with 541 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. His season was cut short, however, when he broke his arm in the first quarter against Winfield Oct. 2.“He only played six full games for us,” McDowell said. “So his stats would have been even better if he didn’t get injured against Winfield.”Abel caught 40 passes for 422 yards and a score, and was also a first-team selection at linebacker after leading the team with 95 tackles.“He led the team in receptions and tackles,” McDowell said. “He had great hustle to the ball and was a great receiver.”Junior linebacker Jacob Null played alongside Abel and earned first-team honors after recording 82 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and three sacks.“He is a hard-nosed football player,” McDowell said. “He has great hustle and instincts.”A pair of sophomores, defensive lineman Chris Vogt and defensive back Brandon Molinari, were second-team selections.“Vogt has a good nose for the football,” McDowell said.Vogt finished the season with 37 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, one sack and one interception.Molinari led the team with three interceptions and 62 tackles.“He is a good tackler,” McDowell said of Molinari. “And he has a great nose for the football.”Senior kicker Dillen Mayfield, who kicked the game-winning extra point in overtime Sept. 11 against St. Charles, was a first-team honoree.“He was consistent for us all year,” McDowell said. “He has a chance to kick at the next level.”
