The Warrenton baseball team got back in the win column against Gateway Athletic Conference foe Orchard Farm 8-1 on Tuesday.
The win snapped a four-game skid for the Warriors.
After a frustrating weekend on the mound, pitcher Dalton Owenby got the win, pitching a complete game for the Warriors. The junior scattered seven hits and struck out six.
“The biggest thing about today was definitely our pitching,” said Warrenton Coach Eric Burle. “We’ve really been struggling all year in that area. We’ve been struggling to throw strikes and Dalton did a really good job of that today.”
Warrenton got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when seniors Dallas Johnson and Brandon Purkaple drew walks to start things off. Johnson scored when Trenton McGee walked. Jacob Abel was hit by a pitch, bringing in Purkaple.
But the offense really got going in the third inning.
Senior Hunter Capstick singled up the middle and later scored on a McGee single. With two on, Braden Lawson ripped a double down the first base line to make the score 5-0.
“We had some great plate appearances and some not so great plate appearances,” Burle said. “We’ve just got to be more consistent. We had some good at-bats and then followed them with some that weren’t so great.”
The Warrior defense got Owenby out of a jam and clamped down on an Orchard Farm threat in the top of the fourth. After two hits and an Orchard Farm run, Warrenton gunned a runner down trying for third off a single up the middle.
Burle said defense will be important as conference play continues.
“This win will hopefully give us something to build on,” Burle said. “We’ve got to take this momentum and show up to play tomorrow.”
Warrenton pushed across three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Austin Dixon, Chris Gillette and Owenby got an RBI apiece in the inning.
Purkaple and Johnson had two hits apiece on the day for Warrenton. Capstick, Abel, Sawyer Junker, Lawson, and McGee all had hits.
For Orchard Farm, freshman Jacob Hanns took the loss on the mound. He allowed eight hits, walking four and striking out five.
The win pushed the Warriors to 4-6 on the season. Warrenton travels to St. Charles Tuesday.
