Warriors Earn First League Win

Trailing 20-15 after two quarters against Zumwalt East, the Warriors engineered a complete turnaround. The Warriors used a third quarter rally to dispose of Zumwalt East 38-28. It was just their second home win of the season -ðtheir first in GAC North play. It was also their first home win of the season. Coach Barb Woodruff says her team decided it didn't want to fold on senior night. "We came out with a lot more intensity in that second half," said Woodruff. Instead of being the victims of pressure, the Warriors began controlling the tempo and scoring in transition. "We've had trouble taking care of the ball against pressure all year," said Woodruff. "But tonight we didn't let that both us." The game hadn't begun so easily, though. Warrenton faced an early deficit and appeared to be headed for their eighth straight loss. The Warriors trailed 13-2 after one quarter. "We came out in a man defense and they took it right to us and put us on our heels early," said Woodruff. Warrenton clawed to within two possessions by halftime. Woodruff said she made made adjustments on defense that seemed to shift the momentum. "We changed our defense and picked up the intensity," said Woodruff. "We wanted to protect out homecourt, so the girls were determined to take over the game." Woodruff complimented the play of Kerri Cunningham, who scored 14 points, including a pair of treys. Juniors Morgan Barton and Meghan Stark each scored seven. The Warriors didn't let their lack of size prevent them from crashing the boards. They also got into the Lions passing lanes, scoring consecutive easy buckets that allowed them a 6-0 run to begin the third quarter. "I was proud of them for being able to overcome that deficit," said Woodruff. "It was a highly emotional game with a fun atmosphere." The quickness of Cunningham and Stark became a growing problem for Zumwalt East as the game progressed. Warrenton led 23-22 after three quarters. The Warriors rolled out one of their best quarters of the season during the final 8 minutes. Warrenton improved to 4-19 and will host Timberland on Friday during their final GAC North contest. "The win kept us from landing at the bottom of the conference," said Woodruff. "This win was really important, especially with districts coming up next week."
