Warrenton sophomore Madeline Carlson returned home from the GAC North meet weighed down with hardware. She helped the Warriors to a third-place conference finish at Orchard Farm on Tuesday, placing in three events. “With us leaving seven events open, we weren’t sure where we’d finish as a team,” said Coach Mike Spoede. Carlson won both the mile and two-mile, while finishing second in the 800-meter race. “We really ran her legs off yesterday,” said Spoede. “I was really proud of the way she handled our races.” Senior Melora Broker helped the cause with four medals, placing first in the 800 and third in the 200-meter race. She also helped the 800-meter relay to a third-place finish and guided the 400-relay to second place. Joining Broker in the relays were Kelsee Schneider, MacKenzie Miller and Lalita Andrews. “Our sprint relays are finally coming around to where we pretty well have a solid four running now,” said Spoede. “They scored points that we hadn’t in the past.” Andrews provided a surprise in the high jump, placing third with a personal best of 4 feet, 10 inches. Senior Melanie Raterman continued to dominate the discus throw, recording a first-place toss of 119 feet, 9 inches. She also took second in the shot put. “That was one of her best throws of the season, and she gave us 18 big points in her events,” said Spoede. The boys team finished second.  "I couldn’t be more proud of the kids that came and performed," said Coach Steve McDowell. There were multiple personal bests, including a surging first-place finish by senior Brett Garrison. He topped his previous throws to finish first in the discus. Logan Shay also recorded a personal best to place second in the shot put. “That was a real pleasant surprise for us,” said McDowell. “They gave us some unexpected points.” The 400-meter relay team shaved nearly a full second off their season-best time. The foursome of Devin Ray, Jordon Washington, Drake Wagner and Justin McBroom finished first. Senior Nick Wallace replaced McBroom in the 800-relay, helping the Warriors to another first-place finish. Warrenton owned the sprint events, with Ray taking first and Washington finishing second in the 200. “It was a photo finish between those two,” said McDowell. “We couldn’t tell from our vantage point who won it. Those two ran very well.” Washington placed second in the 100-meter, while Ray took third. The Warriors also brought home additional medals in the field events. Junior Brian Lanigan placed second, while McBroom took third in the triple jump. Lanigan also finished fourth in the long jump. Junior Jacob Hickl placed third in the pole vault, while Wallace provided a third-place finish in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.
