Riding a 17-game winning streak and sporting a record of 21-4 on the season, the Warrenton High School girls volleyball team has concluded its regular season and is eyeing a district title.
The Warriors were scheduled to play Pacific on Tuesday. Should they win, they will face the winner of Hannibal and Union on Thursday, Oct. 29, in the district championship. The sectional round will be held at Warrenton on Saturday, Oct. 31.
This all comes on the heels of the Warriors winning the GAC North for the second time in three years — but only the third time in 42 years.
Coach Randy Kindschuh likes the way his team is playing as the postseason begins.
“I really believe that we can win our district,” he said. “Hannibal will be a challenge but I think we can beat them, then it’s more than likely that the winner of District 5 will play one of the Parkways — most likely Parkway West. We match up with them pretty well, so it could come down to who performs the little things best to win a trip to the state tournament.”
In a season that has seen a lot of success, the potential for a deep run is not necessarily unexpected.
“We had our sights set on being in this position from day one. My girls have really remained focused, even during our two week COVID layoff they had their sights on a district title, something that has never been done at Warrenton,” said Kindschuh. “We put a lot of emphasis on our serve and pass game and we have obliterated our team season ace record. It was 265 and we are already at 299. We have five girls with over 30 aces, led by Abby Hammerberg with 57, just two from the single-season record of 59 owned by teammate Josey Schipper.”
When Schipper had to miss some time, Olivia Morgan assumed a spot in the lineup and had 40 kills, 43 service points, and 13 aces.
“She was awesome,” said Kindschuh. “She was incredible from the service line hitting any zone that I gave her to serve to.”
Even with those strong service numbers, nothing is guaranteed as the Warriors push forward.
“To make a deep run it will take focus and discipline,” said Kindschuh. “We sometimes have a tendency to get a bit complacent, but I think with the high stakes this won't happen. We need to continue to serve tough and to pass at a high percentage. If we pass well, our hitters will be able to run our offense to a high level.”
