At last week’s Warrenton Track Invitational, both the boys and girls teams came in with the knowledge that the competition would be tough, with their opponents consisting of several larger schools they don’t often see.
In the end, the girls placed ninth in a field that included (in order of finish) Timberland, Liberty (Wentzville), Union, Troy Buchanan, Helias Catholic, Parkway Central, Francis Howell Central, McCluer North, Warrenton, Winfield, Orchard Farm, Holt and the St. Louis Blue Knights.
The boys finished in 10th place in a field that consisted of Timberland, Union, Helias Catholic, Troy Buchanan, Liberty (Wentzville), Fort Zumwalt East, Orchard Farm, Holt, Winfield, Warrenton, Clopton, and Francis Howell Central.
“Initially, we just wanted to go out and compete,” said coach Steve Wurtzel. “Both Coach (Steve) McDowell and I are struggling to fill all of our relays and events, but we knew this was going to be a big meet with some schools we don’t typically see. It was nice to just see our kids elevate their ability to compete.”
One of the top performances came from senior Kolby Meine, who took second place in the javelin (133 feet, 6.75 inches) and third place in the triple jump (40-7). He was also part of the 4x100 relay team that took fifth place and the 4x200 team that placed fourth. The 4x100 team consisted of Joseph Evans, Jacob Parker, William Reel, and Meine. The 4x200 team included Zach Bristol, Colton Brosenn, Evans, and Meine.
“He just continues to do really well in the javelin, and the jumps are another strength he has,” said Wurtzel. “He’s just a really good all-around athlete and we’re really excited about him. He had a really great weekend.”
Other notable finishes on the boys side included Parker taking fourth in the long jump (5.77 meters) and Evans placing fifth in the high jump (1.67 meters).
On the girls side, Dana Pruitt set a new school record in the pole vault (8-6.25) while taking fourth place in the meet. The 4x800 relay team also brought home a fourth-place finish with a group that included Veronika Besser, Loren Howard, Brianna Grooms, and Madelyn Marschel, and the 4x100 relay placed fourth with Ghini DeHart, Bailey Schneider, Pruitt, and Besser competing in the event.
Marschel, meanwhile, placed fifth in the 800 (2:39.47).
“She ran a really strong 800,” Wurtzel said. “She just went out to compete and I could see the look on her face — she was outrunning the pack, she got out fast, and she stuck with it. It was a really nice time for her.”
Overall, Wurtzel was pleased with the results and the event overall.
“All in all it was a big meet that ran very smoothly due to the help and support of all of our volunteers,” he said.
