A home-course advantage helped the Warrenton golf team finish fifth in the Red Division Thursday in the 42nd annual Warrenton Invitational.“I thought it went very well for our kids,” Warrenton Head Coach Aaron Jinkerson said. “We had every kid under 90 and they seemed happy overall how the day went. I was happy with how everything went, as well.”Freshman Travis Toebben led the Warriors with a 9-over 79.Toebben edged out teammates Dillon Keeven (82) and Ryan Adams (82) with an eagle on his final hole.“He’s been a consistent golfer all year for us. In matches he’s been in the low 40s all season, so he’s still on that track, which is good to see,” Jinkerson said. “And for a freshman, that’s been a pleasant surprise.”Hermann won the division with a team score of 295.Hermann’s Ross Henson led the division at even-par.Gateway Athletic Conference rival St. Charles finished second at 316.“When I looked at the scores over the weekend, I realized there were one or two holes that if they went one way or the other, we could have done really well as a team,” Jinkerson said. “I thought fifth place was great, but we were four or five strokes away from being in the top three.”Despite a field that included 26 schools and 130 golfers, Jinkerson said nerves weren’t a factor for his team.“I think it could affect someone, but I don’t think it affected any of our guys,” he said. “If this had been a district or conference competition, maybe. But all in all, I think it was just a good day to play 18 holes of golf and see kids from schools you don’t normally see.”The Warriors hosted schools from all over the area, from Montgomery to St. Clair to Potosi to Van-Far.Getting everyone where they needed to be was as challenging as any bunker shot.“It was time-consuming. Getting the scorecards together, making sure everything was organized, getting the groups started on the right hole and all of that,” Jinkerson said. “I’ll prepare myself more next year with what I know now. But Coach (Matt) Griffin and Coach (Rich) Barton had a good system in place with how to run this tournament. Mr. (Bobby) Spoonster gets the teams here and makes sure we have everything that we need, and then the coaches are responsible for coordinating that day. I thought it went really well.”The Warriors are back on the course Friday afternoon.“We stubbed our toe a little bit against Orchard Farm, but we have a huge match Friday against St. Charles,” Jinkerson said. “That could decide the conference regular season if it plays out right for us.”.OFF THE TEE — Ryan Adams tracks his tee shot Thursday at the Warrenton Invitational.
