Warrenton senior Madi Stevens has signed her letter of intent to play soccer at Doane College next season.
Stevens missed her senior season due to injuries, but was able to land a tryout in front of Doane coaches.
“Somehow they found out I was interested in the school, so they emailed me and invited me to visit for a recruiting day,” she said. “We scrimmaged and they picked eight of the 16 girls that played that day.”
Doane, an NAIA school in Crete, Neb., begins its season Aug. 25.
Last season the Tigers finished 6-11 overall.
“It’s really cool because it’s something I’ve been working at all year,” Stevens said. “Throughout all the challenges I’ve been faced with, it’s awesome to realize that it’s finally here.”
As a junior, Stevens scored one goal on two shots for a Warrenton team that went 6-17-1.
Primarily a midfielder, Stevens said the coaches told her she could play any number of positions in college.
“I think they’ll have me play forward or defesne,” she said. “I played all those positions in high school, so I think having experience will help me adapt to them.”
Stevens said she wants to continue to work on her conditioning and footwork before the start of next season.
“I definitely need to work on getting my endurance back,” she said. “After not playing this season, I’ve lost a lot of speed. I need to get that back, work on my touches on the ball and my left-footed shot.”
