Warrenton's Nordwald narrowly misses medal stand in Jefferson City

Warrenton sophomore Nathan Nordwald climbed 100 spots at this year’s state cross country race at Jefferson City’s Oak Hills Golf Course.

Nordwald finished in 17 minutes, 3 seconds, to finish 31st overall in Class 3.

He posted a time of 18:54 (131st) last year.

“Nathan ran a great race,” Warrenton Head Coach Jeremy Collins said. “We talked about the race and he ran pretty close to the strategy, and he had a great time.”

Nordwald had hoped to finish in the top 25 to earn a medal, missing out by 20 seconds.

“Nathan is a competitor and I think he has a little more motivation to work harder,” Collins said, “and I think 16:30s at state would be a good goal for him.”

Collins believes Nordwald can crack the top 25 next season and fight for a top-10 finish his senior year.

Nordwald was joined in the race by freshman teammate Paul Sanders, who finished 109th overall (18:13).

It was Sanders’ best time of the season.

“Paul ran a great race,” Collins said. “I think toward the end of the season he was learning how to race 5,000 meters, and for him to have his best time of the year at state shows how much he improved throughout the year.”

Going into the race, Sanders was aiming to run the course in around 18:30.

“We said that would be a great time, and he was able to exceed that,” Collins said.

Senior Andrea Poole raced in her third and final state meet, finishing 56th with a time of 20:56.

Poole finished 52nd (20:59) as a freshman and 96th (22:15) last season as a junior.

“She got out pretty fast and she ran a really tough race,” Collins said. “I’m not really that surprised that she took off that much time from last year.”

Collins said Poole’s previous two races in Jefferson City only helped her Saturday.

“Having state experience always helps because it is a different atmosphere and you are competing against the best runners in the state,” he said.

Collins hopes Saturday’s experience will help freshman Lexi Fredericks, who finished 78th in 21:22.

“For Lexi to gain that experience as a freshman is great for her,” Collins said.  “She has a lot of talent and it is going to be fun seeing how much she can improve over the next three years.”
