Warrenton's Greene breaks school shot record; Wright City soccer wins shootout thriller

Tuesday was a memorable day for Marcus Greene and the Warrenton track program.

The senior, throwing the shot put at the Don Olszowka Relays at Union, broke the school record with a heave of 53 feet, 10.23 inches. His winning effort bested Rolla’s Tucker Sowers by more than two feet.

The distance bested the mark of 53-6 meters set by Eric Kessler at the 1996 state track meet.

Warriors coach Mark Thomas said Greene’s reaction was simple and straightforward after breaking the record.

“He scratched his first two attempts but didn’t get flustered,” Thomas said. “After that, he went into the ring and popped the school record. After doing so, he was humble and just gave a thumbs-up. That kind of focus and the ability to not ride the highs and lows emotionally speaks to the high level of competitor he is.”

Just like Greene, freshman Mason Sanders continues his march toward a solid season.

His height of 6-2.75 was second-best at the meet.

Also, Jordan Lopez’s triple jump of 43-1 was another highlight for the team as it was the second-best effort at the event.

“He (Sanders) continues to put up solid performances,” Thomas said. “Jordan’s jump was a personal best.”

WARRENTON BASEBALL ROLLS – Jake Kirkpatrick had a big game as the Warriors went on the road and beat GAC conference rival Holt 15-6.

The junior earned the win on the mound, allowing three runs over six innings while striking out seven.

At the plate, Kirkpatrick hit a three-run home run to help his own cause.

“Jake gave us a great start,” Warrenton Coach Eric Burle said. “This improved his record to 3-0 this season.

Ric Standley also had a big day at the plate. He finished just a triple short of a cycle, going 3-for-3 with a double and a home run. He also added three RBI and four runs scored.

Warrenton (6-7) returns home today to once again face the Indians in a 4:15 p.m. start.

WRIGHT CITY SOCCER WINS THRILLER – In a game that went well into the night, the Wright City girls’ soccer team got the best of visiting Elsberry/Silex.

After finishing regulation and a pair of overtimes tied at one-all, Wright City bested the visitors 3-1 in penalties.

Scoring for Wright City in PKs were freshman Haley Elsenrath, junior Juliana Lopez-Luna and junior Olivia Wilson.

Junior goalkeeper Marli Burkhardt made a pair of big saves in the shootout to help earn the win for the Wildcats (5-3).

The Wildcats will return to action at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday at Valley Park.

WRIGHT CITY BASEBALL EARNS CONVINCING CONFERENCE WIN – Three pitchers, led by junior starter Kolby Bass, combined on a three-hitter as the host Wildcats defeated Louisiana 8-1 in an Eastern Missouri Conference game.

Bass went four and two-thirds, allowing only one hit. He was followed up by juniors Brayden Niemann and William Masters.

With the opposition locked down, the Wildcats (8-6) got solid offensive contributions from sophomore Leighton McDonald, who fell a triple short of the cycle while driving in a pair of runs, and senior Logan Rose, who provided two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

Wright City will continue conference play as the team heads to Silex today. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

WARRENTON STUNT EARNS SPLIT – The Warrenton stunt team went to Fort Zumwalt South on Tuesday and defeated Fort Zumwalt North 25-5, but fell to Zumwalt South 32-15.
