Warrenton senior Dallas Johnson will continue his baseball career at Hesston College, a junior college north of Wichita, Kan.
Johnson is a three-year starter at Warrenton and was named to the All-Gateway Athletic Conference North first team his sophomore and junior seasons.
Last season he led the Warriors with a .438 batting average while playing second base and shortstop.
“I’m really excited,” Johnson said of his commitment to Hesston. “It will be great to continue playing the game I love.”
Johnson made an immediate impact for the Warriors as a freshman, playing all four infield positions and earning second-team all-conference honors.
He became the full-time catcher his sophomore year while continuing to improve at the plate, and the versatility caught the eye of college coaches.
“It’s a testament to the hard work Dallas has put in during his high school career, and the effort he put in before high school to come in and start as a freshman,” Warrenton Head Coach Eric Burle said.
Johnson helped lead Warrenton to a 14-12 record and a spot in the district championship game last year while leading the team with a .512 on-base percentage, posting a team-best 32 base-hits and driving in 19 runs.
“He can definitely get on a base a lot, and he’s got power,” Burle said. “But he doesn’t strike out a lot, either. He’s always putting the ball in play and getting on base.”
Johnson will join a Hesston program that finished last season 18-25 and expects to be sophomore-heavy when he gets to campus in the fall.
Before that, he will lead a senior-laden Warrenton team
“He’ll be tough to replace in the infield after this year,” Burle said. “So, hopefully, he can lead by example and show the younger guys the ropes.”
