The annual Megan Gross volleyball tournament was a good one for the Warren County teams – for differing reasons.
After a tough morning that dropped the host Warrenton volleyball team into the consolation bracket, the Warriors (9-11-5) responded by beating Mexico and Fort Zumwalt East to win the consolation title.
Warrenton junior outside hitter Emma Eskew said that the team took pride in playing as well as it did, all the way to taking the title.
“I wish that we could have won more; I know that we worked really hard for this, though,” Eskew said. “There are some really good teams here, and we played really well against those teams. We got into the 20s with (tournament champion) Fort Zumwalt West. We played really well.”
Warrenton Coach Kayla Nelson praised the team for not letting a less-than-ideal morning session of volleyball against tough competition carry over into bracket play.
The coach credited that positivity as an important factor in the team’s success.
“After pool play, we just decided to come over here and get it done,” Nelson said. “The girls come over here and played positively. I think we’ve done a good job of that, playing through things, and not wavering with our body language when things aren’t going well.”
While Warrenton wrapped the tournament in strong fashion, Wright City played well early in advancing to the championship side of the bracket before falling twice – first to the St. Louis Panthers in the semifinal round and then to Battle in the third-place contest.
Wildcats sophomore Zola Jones said that, while everyone on the team would have liked to finish higher, the work the team put in to compete in the event will do more than any trophy ever could.
“I think our practices help (prepare us for this competition) as well,” Jones said. “A lot of these teams that we play only help us better ourselves. Even though we took fourth, this (tournament) will help us in the long run.”
Wright City (9-7) will next return to the court to host Fort Zumwalt East at 6 p.m. tonight (Thursday).
Warrenton will also return to the court tonight to host Holt at 5:15 p.m.
Next week, the teams will face one another at 7 p.m., on October 8 when Warrenton travels to Wright City.
